The Mat Stevens Biography
You really want to know how it happened..?

Well, It all started back in 1987...

One evening, I was drinking in my local pub in Rochdale. A "mobile DJ" was working there that night.  I started talking to him about the "science" of DJing and asked if I could "have a go".  He obliged. (thanks Lee!)

I started working for him. (doing gigs on my own after a very short time.)  I built up my equipment until I needed TWO large vehicles to transport it around!

I eventually formed a DJ agency employing fourteen DJs, covering Greater Manchester and Lancashire.

In all, I personally worked approximately 1000 functions,  such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, house parties, kids parties (yuk!).  You name it - I did it!

A close friend (and 1987 DMC Mixing Championships runner-up) BRANDON KIRKHAM (aka DJ CAPTAIN KIRK) introduced me to mixing skills, which inspired me to learn more... Thanks Brandon!

My musical appreciation has allowed me the opportunity to play pretty much all styles of music - chart / cheese / hard house / trance / house / r n b - the lot, basically.  Nowadays I tend to play mainly house / trance / scouse, etc.  Occasionally, seeing as I am a "chameleon", I will accept a gig, playing cheesy stuff, purely for the laugh!  I must admit that a change here and there is a good thing.

My preferred style NOWADAYS is upfront hard house and trance with plenty of enthusiasm and personality.  I really enjoy the excitement of whipping the crowd up to fever pitch!

The largest crowd I have worked is 4000 people.  On average, most venues I play vary between 500 and 2500 in capacity.

My proudest moments were playing a 2 hour set at CREAM @ Club ICE Ku - Ayia Napa!  (September 2002), plus FOUR separate nights as resident at CLUB ABYSS - Ayia Napa (August / September 2002)  More of the same to come perhaps summer 2003?

In November 2002, I returned to my old residency in GUERNSEY at CLUB 54, where I was soon promoted to
PROMOTIONS MANAGER.  After Club 54, many international and UK national gigs followed, which also gave me the opportunity to meet many more big-named DJs / celebrities / PAs, etc.

In March 2003, I enjoyed my first press interview with the GUERNSEY PRESS.  Click on the image to the left to zoom in, and view the entire article.

Talking of press, my most recent track:
ZAQ - CALLING FOR YOUR LOVE
, was featured in NIGHT MAGAZINE in April 2003, where I received a very favourable 4/4 review.  More details below...
My ambitions are:

1.  To DJ alongside the big names such as Dave Pearce and Judge Jules and PAUL OAKENFOLD (I have worked with Dave twice now, so that leaves Jules and Paul)

2.  To successfully produce and remix my own brand of dance music...

STOP PRESS: I have completed remixed versions of my tracks
SONAR and OBSESSIVE.

SONAR was included on the BEDA White Disc Volume 112 (see www.whitedisc.co.uk).  The UK's club DJs played the track over 1700 times within the first 2 weeks of release!  I am in communication with remixers and EVEN film companies about this and my other tracks!

My latest track:
ZAQ - CALLING FOR YOUR LOVE
was released on BEDA WHITE DISC 136 (March 2003) to favourable reviews! The track was voted JOINT TOP in reactions by NW and NE White Disc DJs!  See my STOPPRESS Page for full reports / reactions / reviews!

Radio stations have started playing the track on air, plus NIGHT Magazine have reviewed it, stating that "...it deserves to be picked up and released fully..."

RECORD LABELS are discussing signing the track NOW (April 2003)... More news soon!

3.  To travel the world as an international DJ and Remixer. (I suppose I have done the DJ part)

4.  To develop my TV and Film career as a presenter / actor.
I did my first feature film in February 2001 - "Jimmy Fizz" - hopefully they will release it eventually (outside location filming in February is a bit cold!)

More news in the FORUM...

Thanks for your company!
